Project Prepare gynecological teaching associates (GTAs) teach medical students and other health care providers how to do the female pelvic exam.
Project Prepare GTAs have the following objectives in teaching the female pelvic exam:
- Teach students to do a thorough, proficient, and sensitive 10-minute pelvic exam
- Teach students to create trust and lessen patients' fears by sensitively discussing feelings and anxiety related to the pelvic exam, reproductive and sexual health and disease
- Teach students to empower and encourage their female patients to be partners in their own health care
Female Pelvic Exam Outline
- Have trusted referrals for questions regarding sexuality or psychological issues easily accessible at all times
- Enter the room focused on your patient
- Establish a protocol of interview questions
- Create trust and alleviate fears by being able to sensitively discuss feelings and fears related to the pelvic exam
- Recognize body language that may indicate sexual or physical abuse and learn how to discuss these observations with the patient
- Provide non-judgmental health care throughout the exam

- Use the proper draping technique so the knees remain covered
- Use "clinical touch" at all times
- Examine and palpate the external genitalia
- Examine for cystocele
- Examine for rectocele
- Palpate the greater vestibular (Bartholin's) glands
- Assess pubococcygeus muscle tone
- Locate the position of the cervix
- Insert the speculum
- Visualize the cervix
- Perform necessary tests (no tests are performed on the GTA)
- Remove the speculum
- Palpate the cervix and test for pelvic inflammatory disease
- Palpate the uterus
- Palpate the ovaries
- Insert rectal finger with proper and sensitive technique
- Palpate the septum
- Palpate the uterus
- Perform rectal exam
