Project Prepare has been teaching medical students to perform breast and pelvic exams in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 23 years. Patient educators - called Gynecological Teaching Associates (GTAs) - act as both instructors and patients while teaching breast and pelvic examination techniques. Educators teach interpersonal and technical skills for providing a comfortable exam in a supportive, non-threatening environment.
Project Prepare GTAs train over 600 medical students at these institutions annually:
Participating medical students evaluate Project Prepare GTAs. Evaluations consistently indicate that sessions with GTAs increases confidence and palpation skills. Project Prepare staff and medical program administrators believe that increased confidence and better palpation skills, result in less painful examinations.
Project Prepare also works with patients and health care providers to empower women to take part in their own health care.
